One of the great things about living in Downtown Detroit is that within minutes of exiting the tunnel, you (and by you, we mean we) can be out in the farm fields of Essex County doing decidedly non-Downtown Detroit things like tasting decent wines and eating blueberry pie made by Mennonites. It makes for a perfect summer afternoon, even if you can't bring all that produce back with you.
Should you be inclined to head over this Saturday, you could find yourself jumping up and down barefoot in a plastic kiddie pool filled with tomatoes. (Fun times.) We speak of the World Famous Tomato Stomp, the headlining event of the annual Tomato Festival in the busy market town of Leamington (pictured above), which lays claim to the coveted title of Tomato Capital of Canada.
Actually, that last bit was made up. We don't know that that there is any competition for the title of Tomato Capital of Canada. The stomp kicks off at 1 p.m. You know, if you can tear yourself away from the Dream Cruise.
