In Phoenix, one of those booming Sunbelt cities that keeps growing but still isn't all that interesting, a local Ford dealership is running a disturbing, :30 ad that hauls out every cliche in the book, from little boys saluting soldiers to eagles to waving flags to people singing "what you drive, drives America."
This runs incessantly, along with equally disturbing ads showing nice family people petting their children and talking about how they are going to vote for Proposition 102, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman in the state constitution, barring any "activist" judges from allowing same-sex unions in the state. Now that's progress!
Essentially, the Ford ad, for a dealership in suburban Glendale, is out-Detroiting modern-day Detroit in its old school insistence that people who do not buy American cars are dirty pinko commie traitors. (Why do you hate America, Prius drivers?)
Again -- make more cars that matter/last/are affordable to drive, and people will buy them. Why is this so hard to understand?
