Okay, so it's not like the whip-wielding Richard Shelby made Detroit what it is today, but really - can reporters do their jobs for God's sake?
How many times has the man from Alabama been mentioned, how many times has he been quoted hammering away at Wagoner, Mulally and Nardelli, without any - any!- note made of the fact that the state of Alabama, where Shelby is an elected official, paid upwards of six figures per job created to get Mercedes-Benz to set up shop there? P. Karmanos' 11/25 letter reminding Herr Jagoff of this inconvenient truth was mentioned in some quarters, but not nearly enough.
Does this not matter? Because it seems like it does. It is very difficult not to assume that this blowhard has every reason to want Detroit to fail.
