Stupider and stupider

When trying to describe Detroit to those who've never been, I ask them to envision a third world country that can't get back on its feet because too many smart people have left to seek opportunity elsewhere. (Elsewhere being anywhere from Oakland County to the hell out of Michigan.)

Brain drain, caused by the collapse of a system that is easier to abandon than stick around and fix, is now perhaps the number one threat to Detroit's future, more than the economy. Smart people can pick up and dust off and move on from any crisis.

The News' Nolan Finley, not normally the sort of person one looks to for bang-on analysis of local matters, speaks to this in a column today, attacking the City Council, a three-ring circus headed up by the off-her-meds Monica Mugabe Conyers, as a prime example of the fact that Michigan is losing brain wattage at an alarming rate.

Side note: When was the last time you read an American newspaper accusing its local city government of adopting a dominant theology of "black nationalism?" Us neither.

Sometimes, it is hard to imagine any path to a better Detroit without things getting a hell of a lot worse. They will, if this mess keeps up.
