That old chestnut

If you're just tuning in, here's a retread of one of the local stories that locals like to talk about least.

Unfortunate, but true: Roughly half of Detroit's adults are functionally illiterate, meaning they can get by, but don't ask then to grasp anything fancy.

The problem runs right up to the top -- think former Detroit Public Schools board president Otis Mathis, notorious for his poor writing skills. (His penchant for masturbating in front of a female colleague finally got the best of him, you may remember.)

Here are some countries that, according to the CIA, have higher literacy rates than the city of Detroit:

Zimbabwe (91.2)
Honduras (83.6)
Haiti (62.1)
